A clicker is a dog training tool, which is rapidly gaining popularity. It establishes a system of communication between you and your Teacup Maltese puppy that cuts through the language barrier and can make training easier. A clicker is a small plastic item, shaped like a box, with a piece of metal inside. When the metal is pressed, it makes a 'click-click' sound.
The clicker is a signal that your Teacup Maltese puppy has just done the right thing and a reward is coming.

To begin with, take a handful of tasty treats, click, and then immediately give your Teacup Maltese puppy  a treat. You are not asking him to do anything at this stage, just teaching him that the sound of the click means a reward is about to follow. Once your Teacup Maltese puppy has made this association, you can then begin to use it in your training. As soon as your Maltese has done the right thing, click. You then have an extra few seconds to give him the reward.

There are several benefits to using a clicker with your Teacup Maltese Puppy:

  • The sound is clear to your Teacup Maltese  and therefore it helps him to avoid confusion and to learn.

  • All members of the family can use it, so training is consistent.

  • Once the timing of the click is accurate, you have a little extra time to produce the reward.

As with any other type of training, you gradually ask your Teacup Maltese puppy to work harder for each reward, or in this case, each click and reward. If your Teacup Maltese puppy ignores the click this just means that he has not made the association that a click predicts something good. Click and treat him several more times, ensuring that the treats are something he really enjoys. If your puppy is afraid of the click you could try muffling the click by holding it in your hand and wearing a glove.

Do I really need a clicker? No, not necessarily. Many people, and dogs, find that it helps, but some people find that it is simply something extra to think about. Use whatever suits you and your Teacup Maltese puppy.

Where can I get a clicker from? Some pet shops sell them. Many dog trainers, behavior counselors and training clubs will also have them. They will also be able to give individual guidance on using it with your Teacup Maltese Puppy.
